What Makes My Online Reading Tutoring Different (and How to Know If It’s Right for Your Child)

Why a One-Size-Fits-All Tutoring Program Doesn’t Work

If you’re a parent looking for the best online reading tutor, you’ve probably noticed that many tutors stick to one method for every student.

But children aren’t all the same.

They don’t learn the same way or struggle in the same areas. So why should their tutoring look exactly alike?

That’s where I come in.

What Makes My Method Different?

I use a personalized, flexible approach based on real-time data. That means:

  • No cookie-cutter lessons

  • No wasted time on skills your child has already mastered

  • Tools chosen for effectiveness, not popularity

Every child’s learning plan is built from the ground up based on their unique strengths and areas of need.

Do You Offer Free Reading Assessments?

Yes — and it’s the first step in our process. While many specialists charge $200–$500 for assessments, I provide mine free of charge.

Why?

Because I can’t help your child if I don’t first understand what they truly need.

In your free assessment, I evaluate:

  • Phonemic awareness

  • Phonics decoding and recognition

  • Short- and long-term memory

  • Fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension

I also use the QRI-7 to compare your child’s current reading level with their expected grade level. You get a clear picture of where your child stands — and what to do next.

What Materials and Methods Do You Use?

I blend tools based on what will help your child most:

  • UFLI Foundations for phonics mastery

  • RAZ Kids for systematic phonemic awareness and early comprehension

  • Kids A-Z for building real-world reading comprehension

  • Fluency passages slightly below reading level to boost confidence and pacing

  • ChatGPT tools to create visuals, define vocabulary, and build word knowledge

Instead of following one program, I target skills strategically to close gaps faster.

Can You Support Parents with IEPs or School Communication?

Absolutely. Many families I work with are navigating IEPs or seeking school-based support. Here’s how I help:

  • Review school testing or teacher notes

  • Provide tutoring data to share with your school team

  • Join IEP meetings as a supportive reading expert

You don’t have to go into those meetings alone.

Why Do Parents Say I'm the Best Online Reading Tutor?

Parents don’t just say I’m helpful — they say I’ve changed their child’s life. Here’s what a few families have shared after working with me:

“Mrs. Joanne is a blessing from God for our family!”My 4th grader now reads at a middle school level. My youngest used to throw fits before class — now he reads at grade level and actually enjoys it. Mrs. Joanne has given both of my boys the skills and confidence to read anything they want. And as a homeschool mom, I can finally relax knowing they’re getting expert instruction in such a vital skill. She truly is a gift from the divine to all mothers educating their children.— Amber Lyons - Homeschool Parent
“If you’re on the fence — take the chance. You won’t be disappointed.”My 7-year-old was stuck on letter sounds. After working with Ms. Joanne, she’s now 8 and reading complex nonfiction — at or above grade level! And now that my youngest is in kindergarten, she’s working with Ms. Joanne too. The sessions are flexible, fun, and so effective.— Courtney Behrens, Homeschool Mom
“In just 3 months, my daughter went from below grade level to on track in reading, fluency, and comprehension.”Joanne's free assessment, fun sessions, and consistent feedback made a huge difference. My daughter didn’t want to read with us — now she’s confident and looks forward to every session.— Laurie Fakher

How Do You Book a Session — and What’s Included?

Step 1: We start with your free reading assessment

Step 2: I build a custom plan and share results

Step 3: If you choose to move forward, we pick your weekly schedule (1–2 hours/week)

Step 4: Tutoring is billed monthly with no long-term contracts

Most families commit to at least 3 months so they can see their child’s growth across 12+ hours of targeted instruction.

My Story: Why I Do This Work

I taught in the Milwaukee Academy of Science for 10 years, where only 25% of students read at grade level. That number broke my heart. I refused to accept that as the norm.

So I:

  • Became a certified reading specialist

  • Led our school’s Reading First grant program

  • Completed 60+ hours/year of professional development

  • Assessed reading data for over 400 students annually

Through that experience, I learned: no single reading program can meet every child’s needs.

Programs like Orton-Gillingham are powerful — but only when used at the right time, with the right learner, and in the right dose.

Now I take everything I learned from the school system and apply it one-on-one, where I can adapt and personalize without limits.
